Beauty cannot be possessed, yet humans instinctively obsessed with beautiful things of their minds, In the midst of our yearning for beauty, we are seeking and in love. When an audience reads a novel, they are inspired by its beauty and create their own art, literary or visual. Creativity enables us to transform ourselves in the light of our beloved beautiful qualities. And thus someone contributes this to the highest form of love. It is so comforting to say that I have contributed my time and energy in creating arts which words can not tell but stories behind the painting which made it meaningful to my audiences, whether in abstraction or in some kind of forms. This form of contribution has one goal: to connect same kind of mind in sharing of love through creation.
The critical characteristics of Chinese painting is to have a clear mind of what will be painted before the brush hits the paper, and that each stroke counts. It can not have one stroke more nor one stroke less—it has to be precisely finished. Sometimes, the whole painting is destroyed by one wrong or extra stroke.
The opposite is true in oil painting. I simply add one brush stroke at a time to determine where, if, and how the next brush stroke will be painted. You don't know what you want to paint until the end of the painting. It doesn't matter if you make a mistake, the color can also be adjusted and covered. The abstract painting seems easy, but it requires a lot of ideas and imagination. When I paint I experience a mind of intensity in movement, moment, and momentum piled up on my painting. Sometimes I paint for a few days, and sometimes I finish within an hour. The paintings done quickly still turn out surprisingly nice. I empty out ideas before painting, paint wherever my thoughts go, dancing silently with the picture. Generally, I can't hear the sound of background music while I’m painting because I’m so concentrated on my work, but when I pause and take a step back, the sound of music rushes through my ears.
When the two painting methods rotate, the thinking process also rotates. It gives the logic side of the brain a rest while using the emotional side of the brain. If I use up the left side of the brain, then I will use my right side. While sometimes when both left and right are empty, I call this an achievement of “Zen” painting.
